Ole Miss picks Longo to lead offense, McGriff on defense

According to Feldman's report, the Rebels were hoping to improve certain aspects of their offense, specifically their third-down efficiency, red-zone touchdown efficiency and their ability to run the ball.

McGriff, who accepted the defensive coordinator position at Ole Miss on Thursday, will remain with Auburn through the January 2 bowl game.

After spending the last three years calling plays for one of the most dynamic and productive offenses in the Football Championship Subdivision, Sam Houston State offensive coordinator Phil Longo is reportedly making the jump to the Football Bowl Subdivision level. Like Freeze, Longo worked his way up to big-time college football after starting his career as a high school coach.

Longo inherits an Ole Miss offense that threw for 314.9 yards per game in 2016, which was No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference.

Longo coached at Sam Houston State for three years and helped the team win two Southland Conference titles, two trips to the FCS semifinals and one to the quarterfinals.

"I want to thank Wesley for the great job he did for Auburn this season", said Auburn coach Gus Malzahn.

"I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to return to Ole Miss and work with coach Freeze again", McGriff said in a statement Friday.

McGriff coached at Ole Miss in 2012 with head coach Hugh Freeze. The Rebels gave up a SEC-worst 34 points per game and were particularly bad stopping the run, giving up more than 246 yards per game.
