The 28-year-old singer, who scooped five awards at the event, dedicated her Album of the Year award to the pregnant USA singer and said her album Lemonade "made her black friends" feel empowered.

However, Adele was gracious enough to dedicate the award to Beyonce, during her acceptance speech.

The singer returned to the Grammys stage alone one year after her performance of All I Ask was marred by technical difficulties when a microphone inside a piano fell onto the instrument's strings. The Chainsmokers' "Don't let me down" was given the Best Dance Recording gramophone, Megadeth as the Best Metal Performance for "Dystopia", "Tell Me I'm Pretty" as the Best Rock Album, Beyonce's "Lemonade" as the Best Contemporary Album and "White Sun II" as Best New Age Album.

The Lemonade album, Beyoncé, was so monumental, and so well thought out, and so lovely and soul-bearing.

"We've been together for 10 years, and I love you like you're my dad", she added, before taking a dig at her own father.

Others said Adele's remarks were taken out of context and meant to be respectful.

However, Adele's 25 was by far the biggest-seller on this year's shortlist; outselling Beyonce's Lemonade by a factor of 10 to 1.

"All us artists here, we f****** adore you".

With one early win for her "Formation" music video, she is expected to steal the show with her first public performance later on Sunday since her surprise announcement 12 days ago that she is pregnant with twins.

Heading into the show, Beyonce led all nominees with a total of nine, while Adele had five total noms (she won all the categories for which she was nominated). "That's how I feel". And the fact she was rubbing her belly while dancing (and sitting down) just made it all the sweeter. The way you make my black friends feel is empowering.

Some also implied Adele's win was racist. "The artist of my life is Beyoncé".

Urban and Furler, with three nominations each, will walk away empty-handed after Urban was overlooked for Best Country Solo Performance, Best Country Song and Best Country Album.
