Tomorrow, the wait for the PS4's new features ends as Sony shifts System Update 4.5 from beta to full release.
The external HDD support, a long awaited feature, will mean PS4 owners can save the application data for a game directly to an external hard drive. "Following this update, you'll find that the resolution of the system screen displayed on your TV is significantly better when you're out of VR mode". Sony detailed that if the screen size is switched to medium or small the content's frame rate increases to 90Hz to 120Hz.
Sony's PS4platform includes a feature called Remote Play, which allows you to access and control your console remotely from a PC or Mac. Other features include support for custom wallpapers, a few tweaks to the Messages and Communities mobile apps, as well as a new status update that lets you know when a friend is logged in a mobile device and not their home console. You could even pick up the original fat system that has PlayStation 2 compatibility, and open yourself up to over 6,000 games from PlayStations 1, 2 and 3, all without paying a monthly penny for the likes of PlayStation Now. When enabled, games without explicit PS4 Pro optimizations can see bumps in performance up to 38 percent, so it was a bit odd when it was barely mentioned. The PS Messages and PS Communities apps are both being updated too.
There's a new Boost Mode for PlayStation 4 ProSony PlayStation 4 Pro Review Sony PlayStation 4 Pro Review Is the PS4 Pro such a big improvement that it's worth upgrading, or just a failed experiment?
"This can provide a noticeable frame rate boost to some games with variable frame rates, and can provide frame rate stability for games that are programmed to run at 30 Hz or 60 Hz", Sony explained.
The size of the system wide update due on March 9th has yet to be revealed. Boost Mode doesn't work with all titles, but it has benefits for some games. If you get an invitation to a party, you can send a quick reply saying "I'll join later", or "Sorry, I can't join". You can turn on Boost Mode by going to Settings System. And Sony added a PSN service status indicator to the Communities app.
