Even the lower-seeded teams that won were not surprising.
The Villanova Wildcats are the defending NCAA men's basketball champions, and they'll look for a return trip to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 on Saturday as they take on the No. 8 seed Wisconsin Badgers at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. They're fully capable of keeping this game interesting, and Villanova probably isn't pleased they have to face this team in the second round, but Jay Wright's Wildcats should manage to survive and advance to the Sweet 16. They've won a national-best 13 NCAA tourney games in the past four years and can't be overlooked despite their seed. Villanova will play Wisconsin next.
"Hopefully, it should be a good amount of dunks for us, not for them, but we'll see how it goes". "I learned you've just got to work hard".
Back to what I said about nobody having a patent on late-game execution/luck. "Because they have multiple guys who can do multiple things, so we just gotta go out there and play team defense". "We have two rooms in the hotel and one room is for studying".
"Our team knew he has really bad turf toe", coach Buzz Williams said.
After the bracket announcement, Williams tweeted out a video of him line dancing to celebrate the school's return to the Big Dance.
"He's much better", Fighting Irish coach Mike Brey said.
"Odds are, no matter who we played, unless it was Northwestern, we were going to have more newbies", Williams said. "And I knew when they kept cutting it to one that I was going to have to make some type of play, so I was just trying to be as aggressive as possible". Tarik Phillip led WVU with 16 points, who'll face Notre Dame next.
Wisconsin plays with its typical defensive prowess, a trait cultivated under Dick Bennett; refined under Bo Ryan; and now overseen by Greg Gard. The Badgers rarely foul, give up offensive rebounds or allow easy baskets inside.
The sloppy performance foreshadowed trouble for the Wildcats and it hurt that Kris Jenkins, the hero of last year's title game when he drained a 3-pointer to beat North Carolina, couldn't shake a prolonged shooting slump. Hayes averages 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds. And when they fell to the Bulldogs for a second time, they shot just 25 percent from behind the arc. Wisconsin has made the national quarterfinals five times in the past six years.
Hayes leads all current players in scoring in NCAA Tournament games with 147 points (15 games).
Leading up to the Badgers game against Virginia Tech, we talked about how the Badgers bench needed to be more productive for a greater success for the team.
The Wildcats figure to have their hands full defending the deliberate but balanced Wisconsin offense. The Badgers defeated the Hokies 74-72 in 2008.
As Virginia Tech showed, doubling Happ is a recipe for disaster because Bronson Koenig will camp out on the perimeter and make you pay. He's made 34 of 66 3-pointers in the final five minutes over the past two seasons.
