Tim Tebow heading to Mets Class A team: Columbia Fireflies

Tim Tebow strikes out, gets plunked in Mets debut

Tim Tebow to be assigned to Columbia Fireflies, Mets' low-A affiliate

Tim Tebow is headed to SC.

While Tebow, 29, has spent the spring participating in the Mets' minor-league camp, he has been called on to play in six major-league spring games. He batted.194 in the AFL while competing against some of the game's top prospects. The Columbia Fireflies are about to become a lot more famous.

Columbia opens the season April 6 at home against Augusta.

Tebow made his Grapefruit League debut earlier in March, when Alderson admitted the former NFL and Heisman Trophy-winning QB was "somewhat overmatched, especially early on". Hitting coach Kevin Long has been working on shortening Tebow's swing in an effort to produce to cut down on strikeouts and protect the plate.

Tebow will likely appear across SC. Tebow is not a legitimate prospect, but he does appear to have made strides since struggling in the Arizona Fall League against some of the best prospects in baseball. "I'm sure he'll be a great influence on the kids in Columbia and the fans will enjoy watching him play".

"Sending him to a full season club is what we hoped to be able to do", Alderson told Newsday. By the way, we have lots of players in our organization who are just that: "organizational players", Alderson said.

The Mets also continue to scoff at the notion that they are using Tebow as a publicity stunt. Tickets for the historic event can be purchased here, starting at $5, which gets you a spot on the Bojangles Berm.

Tebow started 11 games for the Broncos in 2011 and led Denver to an AFC West Division title and a playoff victory. Since 2014, he has worked as a college football analyst for the SEC Network.
