The Telangana Government on 12 April 2017 made a decision to increase the reservations quota for the socially and economically backward Muslim population and the Scheduled tribes in the state. Various committees have provided facts of their backwardness and marginalisation. He said the his State would emulate the Tamil Nadu Bill that sought to increase reservations. On Tuesday, the BC Commission, headed by B.S. Ramulu, met Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao at his camp office and submitted its report with recommendations to increase the Backward Muslim quota.
Rao had donned the role of a coolie during the decade-long agitation for a separate Telangana state to meet the expenses of a prolonged battle.
He also announced that the hike in reservation for minorities would be done like it was done by Tamil Nadu and if the Centre does not respond positively, he will move apex court.
Condemning the State government's decision to provide reservations to Muslims, Kishan Reddy said earlier, courts had also rejected the reservations based on religion. Tamil Nadu government increased the reservation according to their population. The overall percentage is at 50 percent as per the Supreme Court cap.
Recalling that Tamil Nadu had for the past several years been implementing 69 per cent reservations, Rao said that the BC reservation bill to be brought by Telangana government would be fully on the lines of the Tamil Nadu bill.
The SC, ST, BC and other minority groups amount to about 90 per cent of the Telangana's total population.
We must re-examine our reservation policy. The Assembly session will convene to adopt both the reservation and GST bills. "Those opposing it should understand it", Rao said in an indirect attack on BJP leaders adding that seven states in the country were giving reservations to Muslims. The state government has also chose to increase reservations to BCs, once the BC commission submits its report after six months.
MIM, a TRS ally, asked the government to be cautious, take legal approval and avoid rejection of reservation to Muslims.
