Braves beat Padres 5-2 on opening night at new stadium

SunTrust Park hosted a couple of games before the official opening night - a Braves exhibition against the Yankees on March 31 to wrap up spring training, followed by a college baseball game last weekend between Georgia and Missouri.

Ender Inciarte on Friday night hit the first home run in baseball's newest stadium and local product Nick Markakis drove in the first two runs as the Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 in SunTrust Park's regular-season debut. The Braves roster is beginning to look like one that could not only play.500 this season but be surprise contenders down the stretch this summer if the pitching can continue to get deep into games.

Martinez's misadventures on the mound - he also airmailed a tapper to the backstop and threw a wild pitch - stood in sharp contrast to Sabathia (2-0), who took a shutout into the eighth.

The Atlanta Braves played their first game at the new SunTrust Park on Friday, and it was pretty flawless. Teheran proved he could hit as well as Chacin with his own single, giving Atlanta the last run they would need for the evening. "I'm up on him right now".

Verlander (1-1) gave up 11 hits in four-plus innings, including home runs by Carlos Santana and Lonnie Chisenhall. Dickey's line closed with 6 IP, 7 hits, 1 BB, 6 K's and gave up 2 earned runs, off the home runs in the 2nd inning.

Tim Bectel watched the first pitch thrown at SunTrust Park on Friday just steps outside the stadium in The Battery Atlanta.

Weaver will try to slow Braves second baseman Brandon Phillips, who is 5-for-12 with a homer and four RBIs in the first three games of the series.

Jim Johnson pitched a ideal ninth for his third save.

"I'm really jealous", Jones said as he sat in the home team's dugout three hours before the game.

"Wil comes up with that nine out of 10 times", Green said. "This place, I don't think you're going to have to necessarily crush one to get it out of here".

"I'm in a section right under the Jumbotron", he said. The three-story Chop House bar was packed full of patrons, some holding beers that were aged with baseball bat wood. The Braves should be able to get after Cahill, who is coming off the 10-day disabled list after experiencing a lower back strain coming out of his first start of the season.

The Braves also made a move before game, calling up right-hander Luke Jackson from Triple-A Gwinnett and sending down right-hander Jason Hursh.

Inciarte caught the first out of the game (on the first pitch of the game), then got the first hit, scored the first run and, to put an exclamation point on things, hit the stadium's first home run in the sixth inning to give the Braves a 5-2 lead.

"He's probably experienced anything and more than all the rest of us in this clubhouse", said manager Brian Snitker.

Padres: RHP Jered Weaver (0-1) will make his third start of the season, all on the road, on Monday night.

Twenty years earlier, Jones helped christen Turner Field, which never seemed like a place the Braves would leave until November 11, 2013, when longtime team executive John Schuerholz announced the franchise would be moving to the corner of I-75 and I-285 in Cobb County at the start of this 2017 season.
