Battle Of Aces: Arizona Diamondbacks' Zack Greinke Vs. Pittsburgh Pirates' Gerrit Cole

Arizona Diamondbacks' Zack Greinke throws a pitch against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the first inning of a baseball game Thursday, May 11, 2017, in Phoenix.

Tigers 7, Angels 1: Justin Upton hit a three-run homer and Michael Fulmer pitched seven innings of three-hit ball in Detroit's win over Los Angeles in Anaheim, California. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning 40 minutes earlier on 98.7 FM, Arizona's Sports Station.

PIRATES KEY TRENDS: The Pirates are 0-4 in their last four games overall, are 1-4 in their last five games following a loss, and are 4-10 in their last 14 games versus a right-handed starter.

On the 95th pitch of the night, Polanco finally broke it open for the Pirates, hitting the ball to nearly the same spot, just fair, for a home run.

For Friday's game, the Pirates will be rolling out RHP Tyler Glasnow. What incredible timing for Polanco to break out of a homer-less funk that spans his last 167 plate appearances dating back to last season. He is 2-1 with a 2.49 ERA in four starts against Arizona, and he won his only starts at Chase Field, giving up one run in 7 1/3 innings on April 24, 2015.

Greinke, with a vicious slider doing most of the damage, has struck out 11.

The slider was good and for the first three innings, I was going. After Jordy Mercer was walked intentionally, Williams reached when second baseman Brandon Drury's error on a routine grounder allowed Freese to score. Pittsburgh has scored five runs total in Cole's last five starts. He started at second base on Monday night, going 1 for 3 with a double, walk and RBI.

John Jaso worked a full count as the next batter before striking out, and Greinke was at 32 pitches despite retiring the first six he faced.

Jeff Mathis gets the nod behind the plate.

"I got a one-hitter one time", he said, "but they got the hit the first or second inning so it wasn't very exciting". The Rockies tagged him for eight runs on nine hits, including a pair of home runs, in four innings of a 9-1 loss in Colorado.

- Yasmany Tomas was given the day off, the second time in four games he was not in the starting lineup. The outing ended a run of five straight quality starts.

He is 0-2 with a 5.09 ERA in three career starts against the Pirates.

Ryan Pressly (1-2), the third of five Twins relievers, pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the win. The 26-year-old settled for a no-decision in his last outing against Milwaukee despite allowing just one run and two hits over seven frames. Harvey is 0-2 with a 11.17 ERA in his last two starts and could be in danger of being sent down to the minors should another poor performance come against the Brewers on Friday.
