Pete Gordon, fire chief for Prescott National Forest, reminded residents that 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots died on a hill four years ago on June 30 while fighting the Yarnell Hill wildfire 33 miles from Prescott.

More than 500 fire fighters were on the scene with helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft dropping fire retardant from above, according to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management. "So that, one, is creating a hazard in itself for fire crews".
Authorities issued mandatory evacuation notices for Mayer to Poland Junction, as well as Chaparral Hills, on Tuesday, June 27. Potential evacuations were ordered for Walker, Potato Patch Campground, Mountain Pines Acres, and Mount Union as the fire progresses.
More people were told to evacuate an area south of Prescott this week as the nearby Goodwin wildfire grew to 21,000 acres by early Wednesday. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
Firefighters are asking drivers to avoid Senator Highway and County Road 177.
Smoke from the Goodwin Fire is also impacting several communities in northern and central Arizona including the Flagstaff area. Shelter will be located at Mayer High School. Large animals can be taken to the Coors building at the old horse track, 10501 E. Highway 89A; owners must supply containers for feeding and watering. There are no reports yet of any structures being destroyed as the fire approached Mayer.
The blaze near Prescott was 1 percent contained.
"It's also burning through dense fuel, chaparral, really thick vegetation", Davila said.
