The APM Terminals, operated by the shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk which handles about 16 percent of the world's shipping fleet, was shut down for hours on Tuesday as the company's IT systems were disturbed, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. "They are trying to work manually", a senior JNPT official told PTI last night. At the Spanish port of Algeciras, operations at one of two terminals run by APM Terminals has been down since Tuesday, a spokeswoman said.
The port, which consists of three terminals at present, has a capacity to handle 4.5 million standard container units and GTI Terminal has a 1.8 million TEU capacity. "It's hard for people in the terminals to tell the people on the ground - the longshoremen - which containers to unload", Clerc said.
Earlier this week, business consultancy Deloitte said that "In 2016, energy was the industry second most prone to cyber-attacks, with almost three-quarters of United States oil and gas companies experiencing at least one cyber incident".
"Right now, we understand that it is a global issue at a group level where 75 ports have been affected".
Due to limited access to some of its computer systems, Maersk also has problems processing orders taken just before the breakdown, he said.
"If necessary, the 2M partners are prepared to divert ships away from terminals which are not now operating as a result of the attack", MSC added. There has been a partial impact at APM Terminals (Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd).
"We are here to assess the situation and damage that has been caused to the systems of the Danish company. We continue to assess the situation that may impact our customers and partners and will keep you updated", it added. The safety of our employees, our operations and customers' business is our top priority.
The shipping ministry had also confirmed that operations at one of the terminals at JNPT have been impacted.
Lars Jensen, CEO of maritime cyber security consultant Cyberkeel and CEO at SeaIntelligence Consulting, said in an article on LinkedIn that Maersk Line ships almost 3,300 TEUs per hour, generating a revenue stream of $2.9 million per hour.
