The Tamil Nadu opener, who sustained a wrist injury during the four Test series against Steve Smith-led Australia, complained of wrist pain during India's preparatory match.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India, on Monday, announced that Shikhar Dhawan would replace fellow opener Murali Vijay during India's tour of Sri Lanka later in the month. "The BCCI medical team has therefore advised that Vijay should continue his rehabilitation programme", it added.
Recently, Dhawan has been in superb form, ending the ICC Champions Trophy in England as the leading run-scorer. He last played a Test match for India in 2016 against New Zealand. Dhawan started the tournament with scores of 68,125,78 as India entered the final but lost to eventual champions Pakistan by 180 runs.
Dhawan, who has been in good form in limited-overs, was initially ignored for the Test series.
India's tour of Sri Lanka will comprise of three Tests, five one-day internationals and one-off T20.
India's tour of Sri Lanka will begin Galle on July 26. The lone T20I will be also played at the same venue in Colombo on September 6.
