Jose Quintana stellar in Cubs debut — Chicago Cubs

He certainly dazzled his new teammates in his debut.

Quintana tossed seven innings of three-hit, shut-out ball to lead the Cubs to an 8-0 win against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. "I threw everything in the first inning and just focused on making quick outs".

The Cubs, who ended the longest championship drought in North American sport last year by winning their first World Series since 1908, had ended the first half of the season with a 43-45 record and trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by 5 1/2 games in the National League Central division. "I don't really care about other's people's problems that much, but it's something that's been a challenge for a lot of clubs".

"It was really important under the circumstances", Maddon said.

Washington right-hander Joe Ross will have Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season. He hasn't gotten past the fifth inning in 10 of those starts.

"It feels good to come out with that win", Russell said. "Unfortunately, they got started here".

The White Sox have made tremendous progress in their rebuilding efforts in short time. Toronto reportedly is less eager to let go of the left-hander, so whether the Jays can stay within whistling distance of the second wild card could be a key.

With the move of Quintana to the Cubs, the White Sox have further stocked a farm system with major prospects. The Cubs could lose Arrieta and Lackey this offseason and Jon Lester is aging into his mid 30's which could show signs of deterioration. He also pitched 3.0 innings of relief in Sunday's 14-3 loss to the Pirates, allowing two runs (both earned).

Rizzo hit his 22nd home run in the ninth off Darren O'Day.

It was the Cubs' second consecutive sweep of the Orioles; they took three from Baltimore in 2014. Five Los Angeles pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts with no walks. Adam Lind and Jose Lobaton added two-run shots and Anthony Rendon had a solo homer.

"It obviously just gives us that extra confidence, " Bryant said of adding Quintana, an All-Star last season, to the rotation after a disappointing first half. He got to enjoy a second straight offensive onslaught by the Cubs as left-hander Wade Miley allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings. "We're trying to be at the top".

Quintana was acquired from the White Sox July 13.

PADRES 7, GIANTS 1 Hector Sanchez and Corey Spangenberg each hit a three-run home run off Jeff Samardzija (4-11), who allowed 7 runs and 9 hits in 6 innings.

This season Gray is 4-4 with a 4.00 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 78.2 innings. He walked one batter and struck out five. Chicago has lost four in a row.

The Orioles answered with a Welington Castillo solo homer in the third and a Chris Davis RBI double off starter Mike Montgomery in the fourth.

The All-Star second baseman Schoop made his second start of the season at shortstop and again looked at home there.
