Trump claims warning to North Korea 'wasn't tough enough'

Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo says officials haven't raised the USA territory's threat level even after Pyongyang laid out plans to strike near the island. But officials in Guam, the tiny island territory that Kim Jong Un has threatened to attack, aren't keeping citizens in the dark.

As tension escalated this week between the United States and North Korea, the world turned its attention to the USA territory of Guam, which North Korean state media reported had become the target of a retaliatory attack. Now, about 160,000 people live on Guam.

Guam is a relatively isolated island known for little more than its USA military port.

Trump on Friday declared the USA military "locked and loaded".

If an attack warning is issued, Guam residents should take cover quickly - in a concrete structure, preferably underground - and stay there until instructed otherwise, according to a fact sheet titled "Preparing for an Imminent Missile Threat".

The Defense Department owns about one-quarter of Guam's 212 square miles. An attack or threat on Guam is a threat or attack on the United States. And at the southern end, there's the Naval Base Guam that hosts the Submarine Squadron Fifteen and the USS Frank Cable. "I spoke to joint region Marianas commander, Rear Admiral Shoshana Chatfield, who has confirmed this with me". US officials said there was no major movement of USA military assets to the region, nor were there signs Pyongyang was actively preparing for war. The 163,000 residents that make up Guam's population, which includes 6,000 US service members, are considered USA citizens.

Along with the USA personnel on the island, there are about 7,100 of their family members as well as 6,700 civilian Defense Department workers and their dependents, according to Logan. Altogether, 7,000 USA military personnel are stationed on Guam. The tree snakes have become huge pests and have wiped out numerous local birds and reptiles, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Its population is mostly Roman Catholic and about a third are Chamorro, descendants of the indigenous people Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan first encountered in 1521. "In this regard, North Korea's recently issued statements of threats are in direct opposition to the global community's consensus, and must stop immediately".

Mr Calvo responded by saying he feels safe and confident with Mr Trump's leadership.

Most experts agree that North Korea could have a nuclear warhead small enough to fit on a missile.

North Korea. The DPRK maintains an enormous amount of artillery along its border with South Korea. It has a range of just 12 miles and works by intercepting missiles in the low atmosphere in their final approach toward the target, or terminal phase.
