Mendes performed at the Los Angeles' Theater at Ace Hotel and this episode will be aired on September 8.
In an effort to put the "M" back in MTV, the network will bring back MTV Unplugged, one of its most acclaimed series and number four on Paste's list of the best music shows of all time, for a full reboot.
In its first incarnation, MTV Unpugged featured artists like Mariah Carey, Nirvana, Eric Clapton and Jay-Z and produced some very memorable musical moments, including this under-the-radar Mariah Carey song "If It's Over", which deserves more shine than it has gotten over the years.
Shawn Mendes, who's now No. 1 at Top 40 radio with his latest single, "Nothing Holdin' Me Back", will kick off the reboot with a performance from downtown Los Angeles' Theater at Ace Hotel.
Just about four years ago, a then 15-year-old Mendes tweeted, "To ever meet Ed Sheeran would honestly be the best, he's 100% the person I look up to for music", Billboard reports. Adds Duncan: "At MTV, the brand equity is still so strong".
"People come to my shows not really knowing what to expect, and they leave experiencing a real rock-pop concert".
One of the finest examples of this was MTV Unplugged - a much-loved show which allowed bands and artists to scale back their performances in order to give viewers an alternative perspective on their sound.
The "MTV Unplugged" series, created by Robert Small and Jim Burns, is executive produced by Garrett English with Vanessa Whitewolf as Producer.
