Cardinals place Wainwright on 10-day DL with elbow impingement

A rain storm has settled over PNC Park just as the Cardinals take a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

In 23 starts, Wainwright has gone 12-5 with a 5.12 ERA. The four-game series shifts to Williamsport for the finale Sunday. They beat the Blue Jays 7-4 on Friday. The Pirates and Cardinals will play at Bowman Field in the Little League Classic. With him already in place, the rain didn't disrupt the Pirates much, but it could have if the game went on any longer.

"I thought the command was there", Williams said.

Tommy Pham and Jedd Gyorko belted home runs, and Randall Grichuk added a two-run triple for the Cards. Pinch-hitter Jose Osuna homered in the sixth. It has scored at least eight runs in eight of those 10 wins. Fowler had some stiffness in his back, manager Mike Matheny said.

The Cardinals' first run came just before the rain delay.

Kuhl (6-8) allowed just three hits, one walk and struck out six. Felipe Rivero got his 13th save. He gave up five runs on seven hits, including two homers, with three strikeouts and two walks. Wacha threw 35 pitches in the second. He worked around a pair of singles in his first inning and gave up Osuna's homer the next inning.

St. Louis right-hander Michael Wacha (9-6) got rocked after he pitched a ideal first and was out of the game after four innings. He pitched a ideal fifth inning with one strikeout Saturday.

The St. Louis Cardinals' road to winning the Central Division got tougher Friday when the team placed Adam Wainwright, who leads the team with 12 wins, on the 10-day disabled list with a right elbow impingement.

Frazier went 3 for 4 with a run and two RBIs.

The Cardinals survived a late Pirates push. Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer off Juan Nicasio in the eighth.
