PM condoles the demise of former CM of Manipur Mr. Rishang Keishing

"The demise of Mr. Rishang Keishing leaves a great void in the politics of the Northeast, a region he served with great diligence". Hailing from Ukhrul district of Manipur, Keishing did his schooling in Shillong and started his career as a school teacher. Keishing's term at Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Indian Parliament ended on April 9, 2014.

Oldest parliamentarian in the country-Rishang Keishing-born on October 25,1920, passed away due to multi organ failure on today night at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences hospital at around 8.15pm, hospital sources said.

The Manipur government has declared that all government offices and educational institutions will be closed tomorrow as mark of respect to Keishing.

"Saddened at the passing of Rishang Keishing a long- serving CM of Manipur in the 1980s, former RS MP".

He is survived by wife, three sons and two daughters.

He joined the Congress under the leadership of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and remained a member of the AICC since then.

"Rishang Keishing was a people's man and a pragmatic leader. He was MP since 1952, the first Lok Sabha from Manipur".

Congress expressed its condolences on Keishing's demise. "My thoughts are with his family in this hour of grief", he tweeted.

Condoling his death, chief minister N Biren Singh said Keishing's contribution to Manipur's progress will always be remembered.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee too took to Twitter and offered her condolence on the former Manipur CM's demise. "Condolences to his family & wellwishers".
