WAFU Cup: Ghana and Nigeria to renew rivalry

Nigeria must beat the Ghana in their last group game to stand any chance of making the semifinals of the sub-regional tournament.

Nigeria's home-based Super Eagles frustration continued on Saturday as they were held to another scoreless draw by Guinea at the ongoing 2017 West Africa Football Union Nations Cup.

Frimpong was impressive in Ghana's group wins over Guinea and Mali, but indicated that the team was not going to get carried away by the results so far, as they aim to work even harder in their subsequent matches in order to realise their dreams of winning the trophy.

"It is a must-win game; we are certainly aware of that".

Ugonna urged the Salisu Yusuf coached boys to go all out as a team against the host country Ghana on Monday, and defeat them, while advising the team to improve on its attack.

The Black Stars, after failing to qualify for the 2018 Chan tournament holding in Kenya next year, have been under pressure to win the Wafu Cup to appease Ghanaians.

"Not only must we avoid defeat; we must win to make progress in the championship".

In the early days of the rivalry, Nigeria won more matches in the Jalco Cup, but Ghana had the upper hand in the Nkrumah Cup and Zik Cup encounters that followed, both trophies named after major pan-African figures Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

"Now that we have qualified already we know how to meet Nigeria".

And only a win could save their blushes in the last game of the group against sworn rivals Ghana.
