Smith: 'Stoinis needed someone to bat with him'

On Sunday, India rode on Hardik Pandya's all-round brilliance to thrash Australia in a rain-truncated opener of the five-match ODI series at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

"We know they will do us good service, in the future games as well". We knew if we don't take wickets it would be hard.

Coming to bat after Rohit Sharma's early departure in the sixth over of the day with the score board reading 19, Kohli displayed his class and guided the total to 197 before making his exit after a grueling innings.

"When I joined Kolkata Knight Riders, there were many quality spinners around such as Sunil Narine, PC (Piyush Chawla) bhai, and Shakib (al Hasan)".

"Bhuvi's (Bhuvneshwar Kumar's) spell became even more important because we knew the wrist-spinners would do damage in the middle".

When the duo looked set for a big partnership, Rahane was run out falling victim to a misunderstanding while taking the second run after scoring 55 and adding 102 runs to the innings in second wiket partnership with Kohli off 111 balls.

"The deliveries he got the batsmen out with were unplayable". That's what he gets to the table.

Although, the crowd was sad to see Jadhav leave the crease, but as they saw Dhoni come in everyone got excited to see the Indian Wicketkeeper bat, but that excitement didn't last for long because Kohli was bowled out by Coulter-Nile in the 37th over, Kholi made an impressive 92runs in just 107 balls.

Australia made two changes to the side which lost in Chennai before heading for the game, with fast bowler Kane Richardson replacing seam-bowling all-rounder James Faulkner while leg-spinner Adam Zampa makes way for all-rounder Ashton Agar. They will do us good service in the future as well and that keeps the competition going among the players we have, looking at the World Cup in a couple of years' time. "He didn't panic and we needed someone in the top 4 to do that and make an impact", Smith said at the post match conference.

"We have not only Hardik (Pandya) as an all rounder, now we have a couple of spinning allrounders as well in (Ravindra) Jadeja and Axar (Patel). So we have lot of options, plus we have all our bases covered at the moment", he said. Let us hope that the magical carnival of Dhoni and Pandya continue with the add on of splendid performances by Kohli, Rohit Sharma and others. Dhoni scored 79 runs while Pandya scored fantastic 83 runs. Just like it was done in the first match of the series, bowlers did their best. He and Virat Kohli have always backed me.
