Mersal movie review: Vijay kicks and punches his way through the movie

On the domestic front, the film has lived up to pre-buzz release and saw a massive opening across centres in Tamil Nadu.

The trade estimates and analysts are suggesting that it will break many more records.

How well was Mersal's box office performance on its opening day? It picked up Rs 34 crore ($5.17 million), the report added. Taran Adarsh said Malaysia had a "mania" for Mersal, where the film debuted by collecting MYR 586,665 (Rs 90.31 lakhs).

Mersal is the expensive film in the career of Vijay as it has reportedly cost about Rs 130 crore for its makers, Sri Thenandal Films.

Directed by Atlee (who is riding on a crest thanks to the successes of his past two films, Theri and Raja Rani), the film's story is by Vijayendra Prasad of Baahubali fame while AR Rahman has scored the music. Well, according to the reports with Mersal, Vijay has overtaken Mammootty & Mohanlal at the Kerala box office. The film's pre-release business has so-far minted the makers a whopping Rs 150 crore-plus. The actor-director duo's maiden venture, Theri, was also a top-grossing Tamil film a year ago. The film also stars Samantha Akkineni, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen and SJ Suryah.
