Sony Working On Another Spider-Man Spinoff: Morbius The Living Vampire

Sony Working On Another Spider-Man Spinoff: Morbius The Living Vampire

At this point, I have stopped questioning Sony's decisions to attempt to break it big with cinematic universes but can only remain in a state of disbelief as the studio throws ideas at the wall.

Morbius was created in 1971 by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane for "Amazing Spider-Man" issue number 101. This vampiric tale is being developed by Sony and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, now has Power Rangers writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama attached to its screenplay. Morbius attempted to cure himself but wound up accidentally turning into a vampire instead.

Details on Sony's take are sparse thus far, except that these spin-offs they're developing will not be connected to Sony's Tom Holland movies and are not connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that is being produced by Marvel Studios. He's inflicted with super-strength, large fangs, the ability to hypnotize smaller beings and a thirst for blood.

While the character of Peter Parker is now shared between Sony and Marvel, Sony still owns the rights to Spider-Man and the superhero's stable of related characters. However, Morbius would eventually shine as a hero of sorts, with the 1992 debut of his own series Morbius the Living Vampire.

What route, exactly, Sony is going to go with the character is not yet known as they've declined to comment on the news. An adaptation of Marvel's Morbius, the Living Vampire has been placed into development with a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, the co-writers of the Power Rangers reboot film. The duo previously worked on the Universal film Drcula Untold.

Are you excited for a Morbius movie?

This isn't the first spin-off Spider-Man movie that Sony has announced.

Morbius joins Venom and Silver & Sable, the Black Cat and Silver Sable-centric spin-off, in Sony's cabal of increasingly odd superhero spin-offs.

We'll have to wait to see where this Morbius movie goes, as there is no release date yet announced.
