Sri Lanka appeals for aid after deadly floods

The death toll reached 166 on Sunday following torrential southwestern monsoons causing mudslides and severe flooding in Sri Lanka, as rescuers continue to look for those 102 listed as missing, in seven severely affected districts. The flooding is the worst since May 2003, when 250 people were killed and 10,000 homes destroyed after a similarly powerful monsoon. Almost 2,000 houses have suffered structural damage or been completely destroyed, according to official figures.

"At Heathrow, we operated virtually all our scheduled long-haul flights, though the knock-on effects of Saturday's disruption resulted in a reduced short-haul programme", a British Airways spokeswoman told The National on Monday.

Net profit was Rs 20.79 billion ($322.31 million) in the quarter ended March 31, compared with Rs 27.93 billion a year earlier, the company said on Monday.
